10/23: Gender from Swift to Butler

For this blog post, we want you to use Butler’s ideas to analyze Swift’s poems about women. Butler believed that gender roles are a social construct. Based on the poems we’re reading for Thursday, what do you think Swift thought? Is our biological sex the “original” to our true gender? Is “heterosexuality” the original of “homosexuality”?

As part of your answer to this question, you can focus just on analyzing Swift or you can talk about how the 18th century is different from today. Your essay should be 400-500 words and must cite both Butler and Swift. Your essay should explain how Butler’s essay helps you understand Swift, and should make clear where you agree or disagree with her conclusions.
